E-scooter rules in Czechia (2026)

Last reviewed: 30 October 2026

In short: Czech rules depend on the machine: an e-scooter with a design speed up to 25 km/h and up to 250 W is treated as a bicycle, with no licence, registration or approval. Riders under 18 must wear a helmet, one person may ride, and alcohol is banned. Faster or more powerful machines are motor vehicles with their own requirements.

Notes

  • Czech rules depend on the machine. These values describe an e-scooter treated as a bicycle: maximum design speed 25 km/h and motor output up to 250 W (up to 1 kW for an add-on auxiliary motor, if the scooter keeps its character and can still be pushed). A faster or more powerful machine is a category L vehicle (approval, registration, driving licence, approved helmet, liability insurance) or a category Z vehicle (no registration; a driving licence is needed). The statements come from police press releases, not from the text of the Road Traffic Act.
  • No minimum age for riding an e-scooter was found in the sources read.
  • The helmet duty depends on age: see the rows for riders under 18 and for riders aged 18 or over.
  • The police text gives no numeric limit; it says the ban applies to all riders whatever the category. For a motor-vehicle class machine, riding while unfit can also lead to criminal proceedings.
  • Under the liability insurance act a scooter is not a vehicle for compulsory insurance unless it is approved as a motorcycle type. A scooter approved as a motorcycle is a vehicle and must be insured.
