E-bikes and speed pedelecs in Czechia (2026)
Last reviewed: 30 October 2026
In short: A pedal bicycle with a motor of up to 250 W that cuts out at 25 km/h is treated as a bicycle: no registration, and riders under 18 must wear a helmet. Cyclists must use cycle lanes and paths where they exist. A faster or stronger e-bike is a motorcycle or category Z vehicle and needs an appropriate driving licence.

Notes
- A pedal bicycle with an auxiliary electric motor of up to 250 W that cuts out when the rider stops pedalling and whose power is gradually reduced until it switches off at 25 km/h counts as a bicycle: no technical approval, no registration. The page dates from 5 April 2024.
- The Act sets no separate minimum age for pedelecs; this is the rule for riding a bicycle on the road.
- The Ministry of Transport page does not say whether a driving licence is needed for a bicycle with an auxiliary motor, and no provision saying so was read.
- Registration: Ministry of Transport page, section 2a. Insurance: § 2(a) of Act 168/1999 (version of 1 January 2024, the latest on e-Sbírka).
- A vehicle that exceeds the bicycle limits in any riding mode is a motorcycle (approval and registration) or a category Z vehicle (approval, no registration), says the Ministry of Transport; the 'moped rules' value cannot express this, so the field is left open.
- Any riding mode that fails the bicycle criteria (more than 25 km/h assisted, motor running without pedalling, or more than 250 W without cut-out) puts the whole vehicle in this class, even if another mode complies.
