E-scooter rules in Austria (2026)

Last reviewed: 30 October 2026

In short: Electric kick scooters (up to 25 km/h and 600 W) are not motor vehicles, so no driving licence is needed, and they follow the cycling rules. Under 12s may ride only under supervision by someone aged 16+ unless they hold a cycling permit, and riders under 16 must wear a helmet. No passengers are allowed and the alcohol limit is 0.5 per mille.

Notes

  • Rules for 'elektrisch betriebene Klein- und Miniroller' (e-scooters). The reading covers national traffic law only.
  • Children under 12 may ride on public roads only under the supervision of a person aged at least 16, unless they hold a cycling permit (Radfahrausweis).
  • The law requires a helmet only for riders under 16 (see the under-16 line). The law read states no helmet duty for older riders but does not say 'no helmet needed', so this is not shown as a yes or no.
  • E-scooters are not motor vehicles, but the pages read do not state whether any insurance is compulsory.
  • The pages read do not state whether a plate or sticker is required.
