Last reviewed: 30 October 2026
In short: A dog needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel and an EU pet passport or, from outside the EU, an animal health certificate. At most five animals may travel together, except for events. Thirteen dog breeds are banned, even for tourists.
| Rule | What applies |
|---|---|
| Identification and passport or certificateTravelling with a dog, cat or ferret | The dog must have a microchip (ISO 11784, HDX or FDX-B, readable with an ISO 11785 reader); a tattoo counts only if applied before 3 July 2011. Travel from another EU country needs an EU pet passport, and entry from outside the EU needs an animal health certificate under Annex III to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/705. A dog must be registered in the Danish Dog Register within 4 weeks of entering Denmark. [1] |
| Rabies vaccinationTravelling with a dog, cat or ferret | The dog must be vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before it moves to Denmark, by a vet, in line with the validity rules in the EU regulation. It must be at least 12 weeks old on the vaccination date, and the date may not be before the microchip was placed or read. A booster given before the previous vaccination expires is valid at once. | Entry from outside the EU or the usual regionTravelling with a dog, cat or ferret | ⚠ Not yet verified |
| Number of animals per travellerTravelling with a dog, cat or ferret | At most five dogs, cats and ferrets may travel in a single means of transport, unless it is public transport. More are allowed for exhibitions, competitions, sporting events or training for them, with written proof of registration, and only if all animals are over six months old. [2] |
| Breed or other restrictionsTravelling with a dog, cat or ferret | 13 dog breeds, and crosses with any of them, are banned in Denmark, and it is forbidden for anyone, including tourists, to bring them in. The banned breeds are: Pitbull terrier, Tosa inu, American Staffordshire terrier, Fila brasileiro, Dogo argentino, American bulldog, Boerboel, Kangal, Central Asian ovcharka, Caucasian ovcharka, South Russian ovcharka, Tornjak and Sarplaninac. No exemption is possible; dogs in transit are not covered. [3] |
Notes
- The Danish guide is an interactive tool, so the page text covers several routes. It still cites the earlier EU Regulation 576/2013 in places; the 2026 rules replaced it on 22 April 2026.
