Travelling with pets to Spain (2026)
Last reviewed: 30 October 2026
In short: Spain applies the EU rules for dogs, cats and ferrets: microchip, rabies vaccination and a pet passport or health certificate, with up to 5 animals per vehicle. National breed rules and special entry rules have not been verified yet.
| Rule | What applies |
|---|---|
| Identification and passport or certificateTravelling with a dog, cat or ferret | Dogs, cats and ferrets must be identified by a microchip. Within the EU they need an EU pet passport; from a non-EU country they need an animal health certificate. [1] |
| Rabies vaccinationTravelling with a dog, cat or ferret | The animal must be vaccinated against rabies by a vet when at least 12 weeks old, and not before the microchip is implanted or read. The vaccination is valid from at least 21 days after the primary vaccination is complete. [1] |
| Entry from outside the EU or the usual regionTravelling with a dog, cat or ferret | From a non-EU country the animal needs a microchip, rabies vaccination, an animal health certificate valid for 10 days and an owner's declaration, and must enter through a travellers' point of entry. A rabies antibody titration test (at least 0.5 IU/ml, sampled at least 30 days after vaccination and at least 90 days before the certificate is issued) is not needed from countries on the EU list, for example the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Switzerland. [2] |
| Number of animals per travellerTravelling with a dog, cat or ferret | At most 5 dogs, cats or ferrets may travel with one owner in a single vehicle. More are allowed only for competitions, exhibitions or sporting events (or training for them), with written proof of registration, and if the animals are over six months old. [1] |
