Notes

  • Portugal presumes that goods are held for commercial purposes above these quantities (Art. 61 of the excise code, CIEC). They apply to tax-paid goods bought in another EU country and carried by the traveller for personal use; the wine figure includes at most 60 litres of sparkling wine. Reaching the figure is not an allowance as such: other criteria (commercial status, documents, transport, nature of the goods) also count.
  • EU-wide duty-free allowance when entering the EU from a non-EU country, as stated by the European Commission: the higher limit of 200 cigarettes (or 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars or 250 g of tobacco) applies unless the country is on the Commission list of countries applying the lower limit; Portugal is not on that list, which the Commission calls indicative. Travellers under 17 have no duty-free allowance.
  • EU-wide duty-free allowance when entering the EU from a non-EU country, as stated by the European Commission. The spirits figure is for spirits over 22% vol.; it can instead be 2 litres of fortified or sparkling wine, and the amounts can be split. Travellers under 17 have no duty-free allowance for alcohol and tobacco.
