Smoke alarms in Germany (2026)
Last reviewed: 9 October 2026
In short: Smoke alarm rules are set by each Land in its building code, not by federal law. In Bavaria, bedrooms, children's rooms and hallways leading to living rooms must have an alarm; owners had to equip existing dwellings by 31 December 2017.

Notes
- Germany has no federal rule. Each of the 16 Länder sets its own requirement, deadline and responsibilities in its Landesbauordnung. Only Bavaria was read here; other Länder are not yet checked.
- The direct possessor (usually the occupier) must ensure the alarms work, unless the owner takes on this duty himself.
- Deadline for owners of existing dwellings to equip them. Alarms in new buildings and renovations are required from the start.
