Smoke alarms in Italy (2026)

Last reviewed: 9 October 2026

In short: None of the national rules read asks for smoke alarms in dwellings. Homes let for tourist purposes or on short lets must instead have working gas and carbon monoxide detectors and portable extinguishers. The national fire-safety decree for residential buildings of 12 m or more asks for a manual alarm system above 54 m and a voice alarm system above 80 m. For ordinary homes no national instrument was found; regional and municipal rules were not checked.

Notes

  • Article 13-ter, paragraph 7 names gas and carbon monoxide detectors and portable extinguishers (one per 200 m² of floor or part, at least one per floor) and does not mention smoke alarms. Lets run as a business must also meet the safety requirements for systems under state and regional rules. The duty falls on whoever lets the unit: paragraph 9 sets a fine of EUR 600 to 6,000 per violation.
  • The decree applies to new buildings and to existing buildings only after substantial renovation, and sets management duties by height band. Above 54 m (and up to 80 m) the person responsible must provide a manual fire alarm system with sound and light indicators; above 80 m a voice alarm system (EVAC). It prescribes no smoke alarms inside dwellings.
  • No national instrument requiring smoke alarms in ordinary homes was found among the official texts read. This does not prove that no rule exists, and regional and municipal rules were not checked.
