Meat and dairy imports in Australia (2026)

Last reviewed: 13 October 2026

In short: Australia sets conditions by the foot-and-mouth disease status of the country of origin, not by EU membership. Personal imports of dairy products and infant formula are allowed up to 10 kg or 10 litres under conditions, and meat is subject to strict conditions; food must be declared.

Notes

  • Cheese, butter and other dairy products for personal use are permitted if commercially prepared and packaged, made in a country approved as free from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) with the country shown on the label, and up to 10 kg or 10 litres. They must be declared and inspected. Canned (retorted) shelf-stable meat is permitted from FMD-free approved countries; uncanned meat has separate strict conditions. The list of approved countries and the Biosecurity Import Conditions system (BICON) were not read, so no value by origin is shown.
  • The 10 kg or 10 litres applies to infant formula made in a country approved as free from FMD. For formula made elsewhere the limit is 10 kg or 10 litres if accompanied by an infant, 5 kg or 5 litres if not, and 1 kg or 1 litre for unaccompanied goods such as mail. It must be commercially prepared and packaged and list the country of manufacture.
  • The limit depends on the kind of fish and its preparation: canned (retorted) bony fish up to 10 kg per traveller; uncanned bony fish gutted or further processed up to 5 kg, or stable at room temperature up to 10 kg; salmon and trout have separate limits. One figure cannot be given.
