Home education in Hungary (2026)
Last reviewed: 30 October 2026
In short: Hungary requires children to fulfil compulsory education by attending school. An individual work schedule can be granted for a fixed period on application, but the Act does not set out a general right to home education.
| Rule | What applies |
|---|---|
| Legal status of home educationChildren of compulsory school age | No general right; narrow exemptions only [1] |
| Nature of the parental dutyChildren of compulsory school age | Duty to attend or be enrolled at school [1] |
| Approval or notification neededChildren of compulsory school age | A parent (or an adult pupil) applies to the body that grants exemptions for an individual work schedule for a fixed period, normally by 15 June before the school year; a later application is accepted only if something prevents school attendance. [1] |
| Compulsory schooling ageChildren of compulsory school age | A child becomes subject to compulsory education in the year in which he or she turns six by 31 August; it lasts until the end of the school year in which the pupil turns 16 (longer for some pupils with special educational needs). [1] |
Notes
- The Act does not use the term home education. A pupil may apply for an individual work schedule (egyéni munkarend) for a fixed period if personal circumstances justify it and it benefits the pupil's progress; the body that grants exemptions decides. Certain cases are guaranteed by other legislation (not read).
