Notes

  • The only identity duty found in a read official source is section 12 of the Immigration Act 2004, which applies to non-nationals. No read official source states whether people who are not non-nationals must carry or show an identity document.
  • No read official source states whether a national identity card exists in Ireland or is mandatory.
  • Section 12(2)(b) gives a defence if the person had reasonable cause for not complying. The power to demand applies for the purpose of establishing that the non-national's presence is not in contravention of section 5 of the Act.
  • The page states that Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area and that a national passport or national identity card is needed to enter Ireland from the EEA.
