No general rule on displaying a sign was found.
- Under Article 3 of Regulation (EC) No 2411/98, member states that require a sign must recognise the sign on the left of an EU plate.
- Irish plates show the EU flag with the letters IRL on the left (S.I. 318/1992, First Schedule, as amended by S.I. 452/2013). EU member states must treat it as equivalent to a separate sign when driving in the EU.
