Dual nationality in Norway (2026)

In short: Norway has allowed dual citizenship since 1 January 2020, and acquiring another nationality no longer causes loss of Norwegian citizenship. A person who became Norwegian at birth and holds another nationality can still lose Norwegian citizenship at 22 without enough residence or an application to keep it.

A separate rule applies at age 22: a person who became Norwegian at birth and holds another nationality loses Norwegian citizenship at 22 unless they have lived in Norway for two years, or in Nordic countries for seven years, before turning 22, or have applied to keep it. Those who hold only Norwegian citizenship at 22 are not affected. [3]

Notes

  • Norway has allowed dual citizenship since 1 January 2020. Applicants for Norwegian citizenship are not required to give up another nationality; the other country may take its own view.
  • Persons who lost Norwegian citizenship between 1 September 2006 and 31 December 2019 by acquiring another nationality are covered by transitional rules not described here.
