In short: Possessing marijuana is a criminal offence in Iowa; a first offence carries up to six months in jail or a fine of up to 1,000 dollars. Growing and selling are prohibited. A state medical cannabis programme exists for listed conditions, with a cap of 4.5 g of total THC per 90 days unless a practitioner certifies otherwise.

Notes

  • Applies to marijuana as a controlled substance; repeat offences are aggravated misdemeanours. Medical use under chapter 124E is the exception.
  • Growing falls under manufacture (production, propagation) of a controlled substance, which is a criminal offence.
  • Registered patients with a listed debilitating condition (for example cancer, seizures, chronic pain, PTSD) may buy medical cannabis products from licensed dispensaries; the cap is 4.5 g of total THC per 90 days, higher only with practitioner certification (terminal illness or insufficiency).
