In short: In New Brunswick an electric cycle with a motor of 500 W or less that cannot assist above 32 km/h is treated as a bicycle, so the requirements for bicyclists apply, including a helmet. More powerful electric cycles can only be registered if they meet federal standards. Age, licence, registration and path rules for e-bikes could not be verified.

Notes

  • A vehicle with a motor over 500 W that can assist above 32 km/h, or without pedals, is treated differently (registration as an electric motor driven cycle under the Motor Vehicle Act requires CMVSS compliance or an engineer's certificate).
  • The Service New Brunswick page says a qualifying e-bike is a bicycle and bicyclist requirements apply. The Motor Vehicle Act text read (snapshot of 13 December 2025) defines "bicycle" as a device propelled by human power and contains no provision on age, licence, registration or paths specific to e-bikes. Not verified.
  • Applies to a vehicle that qualifies as a bicycle (motor of 500 W or less, no assistance above 32 km/h) per the Service New Brunswick page.
