E-bikes and speed pedelecs in Nova Scotia (2026)

Last reviewed: 15 October 2026

In short: Since 19 October 2026 the Traffic Safety Act applies in Nova Scotia. A power-assisted bicycle has an electric motor of 500 W or less, or a gas motor of not more than 50 cc, and gives no further assistance at 32 km/h on level ground (30 km/h before). The minimum age to drive one is 14. Where a bicycle lane runs in the same direction, it must be used unless that is impracticable. Rules on helmets, licences, insurance and pavement riding are still being checked.
