Seat belts and child seats in Kansas (2026)
Last reviewed: 9 October 2026
In short: In Kansas every passenger-car occupant aged 14 or older must wear a seat belt; police may stop a vehicle for this alone, except when the only violation is an unbelted adult in the back seat. Children under 4 need a child restraint system, children aged 4 to under 8 need one (such as a booster seat) until 80 lb or 4 ft 9 in, and older children use a safety belt. The fine is $30 for adults and $60 for occupants aged 14 to 17, with no court costs.

- Officers may not stop a driver solely for a belt violation by a back seat occupant aged 18 or older.
- The child restraint statute read does not state a rule on rear-facing child seats and an active front passenger airbag.
