Seat belts and child seats in Connecticut (2026)

Last reviewed: 9 October 2026

In short: The operator and any passenger must wear a seat belt in a vehicle originally equipped with belts; police may stop a vehicle for this alone, except for back-seat passengers aged 16 or older, and the fine is $50 ($75 if the driver is under 18). Children are placed in harness seats and boosters by age and weight until 8 years and 60 pounds, and a rear-facing seat may not be used in front of an active passenger airbag.
