Fireworks in Alberta (2026)
Last reviewed: 9 October 2026
In short: In Alberta's Forest Protection Area, fireworks may not be discharged or ignited without a forest officer's written permission, all year round; permission for low-hazard consumer fireworks is decided case by case. The Alberta government describes type F.1 low-hazard fireworks as the consumer type and restates the federal rule that under-18s may use them only under adult supervision. Inside municipalities, municipal bylaws apply and some require fire department approval.

Notes
- No provincial or territorial rule on consumer fireworks could be verified. The federal rules apply (aged 18 or over; see the Canada page) and municipal by-laws may set sale periods, use periods and banned places.
- Alberta.ca states that under the federal Explosives Regulations a user under 18 may use consumer fireworks only under the supervision of a person at least 18 years old, so the minimum age for unsupervised use is 18. The rule is federal (see the Canada page); the Alberta government page restates it.
- Section 8(2)(c) of the Forest and Prairie Protection Regulation (Alta Reg 60/2017, text read as of 30 March 2017); the Alberta.ca page 'Fireworks and exploding targets' (read 9 October 2026) says permission is required year-round and is decided case by case on current and expected wildfire danger. A fire advisory, restriction or ban may further limit use. Outside the Forest Protection Area, municipal by-laws apply; no provincial sale period, use period or age was found.
