E-bikes and speed pedelecs in South Dakota (2026)

Last reviewed: 9 October 2026

In short: South Dakota has three electric bicycle classes with a motor of 750 W or less and assistance to 20 mph (classes I and II) or 28 mph (class III). A person must be 16 to operate a class III machine, and class III operators under 18 and all class III passengers need a helmet. An electric bicycle is not a motor vehicle; on sidewalks, riders must yield to pedestrians.
