Notes
- The statute sets no separate default figure for built-up areas. Cities and villages may set limits by local law, but a limit applying throughout a city or village or a designated area may not be below 30 mph (with exceptions in §1643).
- Statutory maximum unless a limit has been established under the authorising sections. Absence of signs is presumptive evidence that no other limit has been set on a state highway (§1620(a)).
- The statute has no separate figure for dual carriageways; the 55 mph statutory maximum applies unless a limit has been established.
- The Department of Transportation may establish higher or lower maximum limits than 55 mph on state highways (not below 25 mph). The statute does not state the higher figures.
