Notes

  • 'Use' of an electronic device means holding it in a position in which it may be used, operating any function, communicating by means of it, or any prescribed use. Electronic devices are cellular phones and other devices with a telephone function or that send or receive e-mail or text messages. The ban does not apply while the vehicle is lawfully and safely parked and not impeding traffic, or to permitted users such as peace officers, fire and emergency medical responders.
  • A fully licensed driver may use a device configured and equipped for hands-free use in its telephone function, subject to conditions imposed by regulation. The Government of Yukon page states that only full-licence holders can use a hand-held device if it is set up and used hands-free.
  • The Government of Yukon page states 3 demerit points for full-licence holders; the same penalty page lists up to a CAD 500 fine, and graduated licence holders also lose earned driving-experience days.
  • The government page gives a maximum (up to CAD 500), not a fixed ticket amount; 3 demerit points also apply.
