Notes

  • North Carolina defines a single category: a bicycle with two or three wheels, a seat, pedals and an electric motor of no more than 750 watts, with a maximum speed of 20 mph on a level surface on motor power alone. It has no class 1, 2 and 3 system. A rider has the duties of a vehicle driver.
  • No minimum age for operating an electric assisted bicycle was found in the provisions read.
  • The helmet statute names bicycles. The definition (7a) describes an electric assisted bicycle as a bicycle, but no provision was found that expressly applies the helmet duty to it.
  • Derived from the definition of "motor vehicle", which does not include electric assisted bicycles "except as specifically provided otherwise". The licensing and registration articles were not read.
  • Rules on where electric assisted bicycles may be ridden (bicycle paths, greenways) were not found in the provisions read.
