E-bikes and speed pedelecs in Louisiana (2026)

Last reviewed: 9 October 2026

In short: Louisiana defines three classes of electric-assisted bicycle (motor under 750 W; 20 mph or 28 mph), gives them bicycle rights and duties and excludes them from the definition of motor vehicle. Class three riders must be 12 or older and all class three riders and passengers must wear a helmet. E-bikes may go where bicycles may, but path authorities can ban class three, and class one or two after a public hearing.
