E-bikes and speed pedelecs in Prince Edward Island (2026)
Last reviewed: 9 October 2026
In short: Prince Edward Island has no separate e-bike category: an electric-motor vehicle that cannot exceed 50 km/h is a moped (motor assisted pedal bicycle), which is not a bicycle or a motor vehicle except for compulsory third party insurance. It may not be ridden on the pavement except to reach a driveway or adjacent land. Age, helmet and licence rules were not verified.

Notes
- A vehicle with an electric motor that cannot exceed 50 km/h is a moped or motor assisted pedal bicycle, not a bicycle. A moped is not a motor vehicle except for Part XI.
- The Act defines a moped or motor assisted pedal bicycle as a vehicle with an electric motor (or a motor of up to 50 cc) that cannot achieve more than 50 km/h on level ground when driven by a person weighing 60 kg and that has no more than three wheels. A device of this kind is excluded from the definition of bicycle.
- The Highway Traffic Act (current to 29 May 2026) has no age, licence or helmet rule for a moped. The bicycle helmet duty (s 194(2)(a.1)) applies to a bicycle, a term that excludes a moped; the crash helmet duty (s 213(4)) applies to a motorcycle, which includes a bicycle with a motor attached, and whether an electric moped is covered was not determined. The moped regulations could not be reached (the Prince Edward Island legislation pages sit behind a bot check). Not verified.
- A moped is excluded from the definition of motor vehicle, except that for Part XI (compulsory third party insurance) it is deemed to be a motor vehicle. Registration and licence plate provisions, which would be in regulations not located, were not read.
