E-bikes and speed pedelecs in Northwest Territories (2026)

Last reviewed: 9 October 2026

In short: In the Northwest Territories the Department of Infrastructure treats a power bicycle (pedals, motor up to 500 W, up to 32 km/h) under the rules of the road for bicycles, so it may not be ridden on the pavement and must use an adjacent cycle path. No licence, registration, insurance or helmet is required, and no minimum age applies.

Notes

  • The Department defines a power bicycle as a pedal bicycle with an electric motor (maximum 500 W) and a top speed of 32 km/h. The Motor Vehicles Act itself has no such category; the rules come from Department guidance (manual revised March 2020).
  • The Motor Vehicles Act rule is written for bicycles. The Department of Infrastructure states that a power bicycle is subject to the same rules of the road as a bicycle.
