E-scooter rules in Northern Territory (2026)

Last reviewed: 13 October 2026

In short: The Northern Territory legislation was read, but the official e-scooter guidance could not be. Low-powered motorised scooters (up to 200 W and 10 km/h) need an approved bicycle helmet; faster or more powerful scooter-type devices are not among the vehicles excluded from the definition of motor vehicle.

Notes

  • Only e-scooters supplied by Beam Mobility Australia may be used in public places (Darwin area), and the rules read apply to those hire e-scooters. A privately owned e-scooter may be ridden only on private property. Read from an Internet Archive snapshot of the official page dated 19 December 2025.
  • Applies to a 'motorised scooter': a scooter with a footboard and handlebars for one person, with motors of no more than 200 W combined and not faster than 10 km/h on level ground.
  • The Northern Territory Government guidance pages refused automated access and the legislation read has no dedicated personal mobility device rules.
  • This is a reading of the definitions in the legislation, not a statement from a Government guidance page. Other e-scooter rules in the Territory were not found in the legislation read.
